** I. Brief Introduction to the College**

The College of Mathematics is one of the oldest colleges and departments in Sichuan University. In 1896 (Guangxu 22nd year), Lu Chuanlin, the Governor-General of Sichuan, established the Sichuan Chinese-western School by imperial order and made certain that “The key point of western knowledge is arithmetic”, a college of arithmetic was hence established and became the source of the College of Mathematics. The college of arithmetic enrolled a total of 30 students who major in arithmetic for the first year. Later, the School underwent several changes and mergers and was transformed into a national university in 1931: Sichuan University. During that period, the university began to set up departments in 1924; the name “Department of Mathematics” was used therefrom. The then Director of the Department of Mathematics was Ke Zhao in 1938 and was replaced by Wu Daren in 1942. In the context of national regulation of colleges and departments in 1952, teachers from departments of mathematics of Chongqing University and West China University were incorporated into the Department of Mathematics in Sichuan University, the lineup of teachers was thus enhanced. Famous professors taught in the Department from 1938 to 1952, such as Ke Zhao, Li Guoping, Wu Daren, Pu Baoming, Zhang Dingming, Hu Kunsheng and Wei Shizhen, et al. In 1978, Institute of Mathematics, Sichuan University was established, which received official approval from the Ministry of Education in 1983; its successive Directors were: Ke Zhao (1978-1984), Lu Wenduan (1984-1992) and Liu Yingming (1994-2016). From 1994 to 2000, University of Science and Technology of Chengdu and West China University of Medical Science merged with Sichuan University in succession, and the teachers of mathematical foundations from the two universities were thus incorporated in the Department of Mathematics of Sichuan University. During the period, the Department of Mathematics SCU was renamed as the College of Mathematics SCU in 1998.

The College of Mathematics boasts complete academic disciplines and a strong faculty. The College now has in total 170 teachers, where there are 143 full-time teachers, including 2 foreign teachers. There are 47 professors, 3 specially-appointed researchers, 39 associate professors and 6 specially-appointed associate research fellows, 35 doctoral student advisers and 54 academic advisers to MA candidates, one member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 people picked for the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 4 specially hired professors for Changjiang Scholars program of the Ministry of Education, 2 chair professors, 5 people awarded with type A and 5 people with type B of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 people awarded with the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, one person picked for the Recruitment Program for Young Professionals and 14 people awarded with New Century Excellent Talents by the Ministry of Education.

Outstanding advantages in academic disciplines: In 2001, fundamental mathematics and applied mathematics became the first batch of key construction disciplines of China. In 2007, mathematics became the first batch of level-1 disciplines and the key national disciplines; and it was also the key construction discipline of the “211” and “985” Projects in China. In 1981, the College was in the first batch to obtain the right to grant doctoral degrees of fundamental mathematics, and a doctoral degree program on applied mathematics was established in 1987. In 1992, a postdoctoral program was set up. In 1997, it was in the first batch to obtain the right to grant doctoral degrees of the level-1 discipline on mathematics. The College was in the first batch to be selected as the National Basic Science and Mathematics Talent Training Base and for the National Test Plan to Cultivate Top Students in Basic Discipline. In 2011, the College of Mathematics, jointly with the School of Economics and the School of Public Health, took the lead in acquiring the approval of doctoral degree program of the level-1 discipline on statistics.

Outstanding achievements in scientific research: In recent 10 years, we have carried out more than 20 key fund projects at provincial level or above, including Group Projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Crossed and Integrated Research Platform Cultivation Projects of Tianyuan Fund for Mathematics of NSFC, “973” Projects of Ministry of Science and Technology, key projects of NSFC, Innovative Team Projects of Ministry of Education and so on; and the College also received important scientific research awards and titles as follows: the Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of Ho Leung Ho Lee, the “Fellow” title from International Fuzzy Systems Association, the Outstanding Young Scholar Award of Hong Kong Qiu Shi Foundation, the second award of National Natural Science Award, the Hua Luogeng Prize for mathematics of Chinese Mathematical Society and other prizes for scientific research at provincial level.

Remarkable achievements in education: In the recent years, the College of Mathematics SCU have been enrolled on a yearly basis around 180 undergraduates and over 100 postgraduates, including 30 doctoral students or more. The National Mathematics Talent Training Base has been assessed as the National Top Base for two times. The mathematics and applied mathematics are national special disciplines. And the information and computing science discipline as well as the statistics discipline are the bases for cultivating talents in Sichuan. Our College has received numerous awards for education achievements at provincial and national levels. In the students fostered by our College, 2 have become the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; 3 were invited to give invitation speeches on the International Congress of Mathematicians; several have served as professors or researchers in famous universities or academic institutions at home and abroad; and some are picked for domestic important talent programs such as the “Recruitment Program of Global Experts”, the Changjiang Scholars program of the Ministry of Education and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

The College is possessed of abundant books and journals about mathematics, a collection of nearly 80 thousand Chinese and foreign-language books, and over 300 kinds of journals; it also has excellent experiment and office conditions: One computer room for teachers and 4 for students, 3 specialized laboratories and 1 multimedia laboratory, creating good conditions for specialized learning and research.

Located to the beautiful Jinjiang River of Chengdu and embraced in a nice humanistic atmosphere, Sichuan University is a good place for people to be immersed in learning and studying mathematics. The College of Mathematics, owning active academic atmosphere, profound academic foundations, a loose research environment and a long history of education, is a perfect place for imparting knowledge and educating people. “People-oriented, Advocating Academia and Pursuing Excellence” is our purpose of running the school, and “Deep Foundation, Extensive Disciplines, High Quality and Strong Abilities” is our goal of educating people. Through years of development and construction, the College of Mathematics has become the top base, with the strongest strength in all aspects, for fostering talents and researching mathematics in west China. It also has obvious dominance around the country while showing increasing influence worldwide.

**III. Education Resources and Facilities**

The College possesses complete education resources and facilities. The College’s library has developed into a literature resource system — the coexistence of printed and digital resources as well as the simultaneous development in the possessed and available resources. So far, there is a collection of nearly 100 thousand books, 10 kinds of imported English databases and 200 sorts of journals in the College, greatly broadening the channels for the teachers and students to use the information resources of the literature. The College has 4 laboratories: Nonlinear and Uncertain Engineering System Control Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, Provincial Key Laboratory of Information Mathematics Technology as well as Information and Computing Science Laboratory. With the rapid growth of education quality and continuous implementation of the development plan for building powerful undergraduate courses of the College, our conditions and environments for experiments and education have been improving through enduring efforts of the entire teachers and students by virtue of close concerns from the leaders of our College.
